Product Review: Material

Written by: Kaylee Franklin

Starting this product review with a warning. When handling certain products, remember that some are sharper than others. Now that we got that out of the way, I can introduce you to a beautiful brand…Material.

As you all know, I love a good kitchen brand just as much as I love good marketing. Material’s got both. Eunice Byun and her Co-Founder set out to create Material as a modern kitchen brand. If you're looking to upgrade your knives, cutting boards, cookware tools, or really anything you need to prepare a delicious meal, Material designs, and manufacturers kitchenware for the modern home. They're really a one-stop shop, which is amazing for all you cooks out there, or those of us who just like being in the kitchen.

In this review, I’ll just be covering a selection of knives and a cutting board, but if you’re wanting an in-depth look at Material, you can head to their website, and also check out Lee’s interview with Co-Founder and CEO, Eunice Byun on Episode 135: Keen on Kitchens. It's a jam-packed interview with wisdom, inspirations, product, influencer marketing, how to build relationships with investors, and more! You don’t want to miss it.

We of course have to talk about the branding and marketing behind Material as I think they did an excellent job. Each and every product is sleek and simple in design, with unique colors allowing you to choose your favorite, and match your aesthetic. When delivered, the packaging was the same. A sleek box in their branding, but it was set apart from the other random assortment of boxes I’ve received, it stood out and it was beautiful.

I got the Trio of Knives set, which has been featured on Oprah's Favorite Things list, Rolling Stone magazine, and Vogue. This knife set is top-of-the-line. They are meticulously sharp - trust me I know… remember that warning I gave at the beginning? I may have sliced my finger a bit on my first use.

Apart from them being seriously sharp and beautiful, they are the perfect set everybody needs in their kitchen. Included in the set is an 8” Knife, a vital kitchen necessity, the Almost 4” Knife, the perfect go-to for slicing, and the Serrated 6” Knife, perfect for bread and much more!

The Trio of Knives set comes priced at $155. Not bad for some of the sharpest knives on the planet (don’t hold me to that) and comes in four different colors. For an additional $90 you can purchase the Knife Stand, and when you add another $15 you can get The Sharpener. The perfect pairing for the modern cook!

The other item I got from Material was The reBoard, also known as my favorite cutting board ever. The reBoard cutting boards are BPA-free cutting boards and are made entirely of kitchen plastic scraps and renewable sugarcane. How cool is that?

What I love about the reBoard is that it's slim and large. I have the hardest time with cutting boards as they can oftentimes be too big and bulky, or thin and flimsy. The reBoard is perfect as it’s large and you can slide it into any drawer and easily have it in the cabinet. I love how much room I have when chopping my vegetables, and that it makes for an easy clean. The reBoard is priced at $35 and comes in five different colors.

The good news for all of us is that the knives and cutting board isn’t the only thing Material has! If you’re wanting to expand your kitchen materials (see what I did there;) they are the place to do so! They have every pan, glassware, cookware, ceramics, tools, and linens to choose from, truly making it a one-stop shop for all your kitchen needs.
